Also known as
Octyl Salicylate 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate Octisalate Neo Heliopan OS Escalol 587
Compatibility
Works well with:
Octocrylene Avobenzone Homosalate Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate
Use caution with:
Titanium Dioxide (uncoated)
Ethylhexyl Salicylate is an excellent co-solvent for avobenzone, helping to dissolve it and improve its photostability when paired with stabilizers such as octocrylene or DHHB. It is oil-soluble and should be incorporated into the oil phase of emulsions. Uncoated titanium dioxide and some mineral filters can promote photodegradation in oil-phase UV systems, so coated grades and appropriate stabilizers are recommended.
Formulation notes
Ethylhexyl Salicylate (Octisalate) is an oil-soluble UVB filter absorbing in the 280–320 nm range, approved in the EU up to 5% and the US (as Octisalate) up to 5% in OTC sunscreen products. It also functions as an emollient and co-solvent, aiding the dissolution of other UV actives in the oil phase. It is generally well tolerated but may cause sensitization in salicylate-sensitive individuals; patch testing is advised for sensitive-skin formulations.
