Is snail mucin body lotion cruelty-free or vegan?

By Blake Mereby · Last reviewed September 4, 2026

Snail mucin body lotion is not vegan. Snail secretion filtrate is harvested from live snails — typically by allowing snails to move across a mesh or surface under controlled stress conditions — and is therefore an animal-derived ingredient by definition. No certification body that defines vegan products (The Vegan Society, PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies vegan category, or Leaping Bunny's vegan tier) will certify a product containing snail secretion filtrate as vegan. If you make a vegan claim on a product containing this ingredient, you are making a false advertising statement that can trigger FTC action in the US or Trading Standards enforcement in the UK and EU.

The cruelty-free question is more nuanced. Snail mucin can be harvested in ways that do not injure or kill the snails — many reputable Korean and Italian producers use methods they describe as stress-free or humane, allowing snails to produce secretion naturally and returning them to enclosures afterward. However, "cruelty-free" in the cosmetics context is most commonly understood to mean "not tested on animals," not a statement about sourcing of animal-derived ingredients. Leaping Bunny and PETA's cruelty-free certification both require that no animal testing occur at any stage of supply chain, but neither precludes animal-derived ingredients — they just won't certify the product as vegan.

If cruelty-free is important to your brand, work with a manufacturer who can provide documentation of the snail filtrate supplier's harvesting practices and a supply chain no-animal-testing declaration. This is increasingly expected by specialty retailers like Credo Beauty and by EU market importers under the EU animal testing ban.

For consumers who want the same performance benefits without the animal-derived ingredient, synthetic alternatives (fermented botanical hydrolysates, synthetic allantoin, biosaccharide gum) exist but do not replicate the full bioactive profile of real snail secretion filtrate. Be transparent with your audience about what your product contains and does not contain. AJ Cosmo Labs allows you to note these requirements directly in your project brief so that only manufacturers with the appropriate sourcing practices respond.
