The effective and commercially viable concentration of hyaluronic acid in a body serum sits between 0.1% and 2% by weight, with the optimal range depending on the molecular weight of the HA used and the skin benefit you are claiming.

High-molecular-weight HA (1,000–1,800 kDa) is the most common grade in body serums. It is too large to penetrate beyond the stratum corneum and instead forms a moisture-binding film on the skin surface, delivering an immediate plumping and smoothing effect. Concentrations of 0.5%–1% are typical and cost-effective at this grade. Going above 2% with high-MW HA creates a sticky, pilling texture that consumers dislike and that formulates poorly in lightweight serum vehicles.

Low-molecular-weight HA (5–50 kDa) penetrates slightly deeper into the upper epidermis and is associated with longer-lasting hydration claims. Because it is more expensive to produce (enzymatic degradation or controlled hydrolysis), formulators typically use it at 0.1%–0.5% in combination with high-MW HA rather than as the sole HA source. This two-HA-weight approach — sometimes called a "HA complex" — is a strong marketing differentiator and is technically straightforward to formulate.

Sodium hyaluronate, the sodium salt form of HA, is more stable in water-based formulas and is what most manufacturers actually use despite products being marketed as containing "hyaluronic acid." The two terms are used interchangeably in consumer marketing but are technically distinct on an INCI label, where you must declare the correct name.

From a regulatory standpoint, neither the FDA nor the EU Cosmetics Regulation mandates a minimum HA concentration for cosmetic products making hydration claims. However, if you claim "clinically proven" hydration, you need study data — in vitro corneometry or in vivo dermatologist-tested panels — to substantiate it, regardless of concentration.

A common formulation mistake for indie brands is over-loading HA above 2% thinking more equals better performance. At high concentrations in low-ionic-strength water, HA forms a gel that is difficult to pump and leaves an unpleasant tacky residue. Your cosmetic chemist should balance HA concentration against the humectant system (glycerin, propanediol, panthenol), the thickener, and the pH — HA performs best between pH 5 and 7.
