Reading a moisturizer label for barrier repair is simpler than it sounds once you know what the ingredient list structure means. In the US and EU, ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration down to 1% — below 1%, they can appear in any order. So the first five to eight ingredients are the workhorse of the formula.
First, look for ceramides in the top half of the list. Ceramide NP, ceramide AP, ceramide EOP, and ceramide NS are the most studied for barrier function. If ceramides appear near the bottom, they are present at trace levels — likely for label claims rather than clinical effect. A product making a genuine ceramide investment puts them above the 1% threshold.
Second, check for glycerin or another humectant near the top. Glycerin is the clearest signal — if it appears early in the list, the formula is doing meaningful humectant work. Sodium hyaluronate or hyaluronic acid lower on the list is fine, since it is effective at lower concentrations. Urea at low concentrations is useful on dry, roughened skin.
Third, look for an occlusive ingredient. Petrolatum and mineral oil are the most effective. Dimethicone (a silicone) is effective and lighter. Squalane is a good option for oily skin types. If none of these appear and the formula is only emollients and humectants, it will moisturize but not seal the barrier effectively.
Fourth, scan the bottom of the list for fragrance (parfum), essential oils, and alcohol denat. If your skin is reactive or damaged, these are inflammation risk factors and you are better served by a fragrance-free alternative.
Fifth, do not be distracted by hero-ingredient marketing. "Vitamin C complex," "plant stem cells," "ocean minerals" — these often appear below 1% and are present for the story on the front of the pack, not for clinical effect. The boring ingredients near the top are usually doing more measurable work than the exciting ingredients near the bottom.
Finally, be skeptical of proprietary blends listed as a single entry ("TFC8," "Miracle Broth," etc.) — you cannot assess concentration or composition from the label alone, which means you are extending trust to the brand's claims rather than reading the evidence yourself.
